Maggy Johnston Biography

MaggyJ, an artist of multifaceted talents, has been honing her skills in painting and sculpting since the dawn of the millennium. However, it was her Master of Fine Arts degree from Whitecliffes College in 2014 that truly ignited her passion for contemporary art, particularly those themes rooted in environmental consciousness and gender equality. Her unique approach involves the transformation of traditionally ‘masculine’ materials and environmentally harmful items into sculptural textiles. By employing skills often associated with femininity, she crafts mesmerizing 3D artworks that beckon viewers to engage, prompting them to reflect on their own habits related to waste, consumerism, and environmental impact. ‘Autumnal Hues’, one of her notable works, is a testament to the beauty of nature’s changing palette and a call to arms for environmental respect. The large leaves, intricately crocheted from coloured floristry wire – a material destined entirely for landfill – serve as a poignant reminder of nature’s inherent cycle of life and death while simultaneously highlighting our perilous neglect for our environment. These sculptures are a paradox in themselves – appearing both fragile and monumental. The contrast between the ‘hard’ materials used and the ‘feminine’ techniques employed results in delicate yet profound artwork, inviting viewers to inspect closely and introspect deeply. In essence, ‘Autumnal Hues’ is a captivating blend of intrigue and allure, a visual symphony that resonates with every observer.
