Esther Deans is excited to offer a still life painting in oils weekend workshop, an opportunity for intermediate to advanced painters to delve deeper into oil painting from life. In this workshop, Esther will guide you through a method for observational painting, using measuring techniques to construct a small painting of flowers.
The object will be to focus on the process rather than the final painting, encouraging students to embrace ‘mistakes’ through erasing and re-drawing. This workshop aims to enrich students’ understanding of tone, form, and colour, fostering a heightened appreciation for the world around them.
Esther Deans is an accomplished painter currently living and working in her home village of Peel Forest in South Canterbury, New Zealand alongside her partner, the painter David O. Jones. Her love of art was nurtured within her family, particularly by her grandfather, Austen Deans, and her uncle, Lindsay Crooks, who played pivotal roles in shaping her observational painting skills.
Esther studied English and Philosophy at university and worked as an English teacher for several years before returning to painting. She has since completed a Master of Visual Arts at Auckland University of Technology and is currently working towards her PhD in visual arts.
